People often ask me how to tell if their skin is dehydrated or dry.
In the cosmetic industry, we often hear about moisturizing creams, day creams, night creams, serums, and many other products that claim to hydrate the skin.
But in reality, hydrating the skin and maintaining its hydration are two very different concepts.
Let's imagine for a moment that the skin absorbs water like a sponge when we take a shower. You would be completely swollen after a bath and overflowing with water!
Dehydrated skin is a skin that struggles to retain its hydration and needs help in strengthening its lipid barrier (TEWL or TWL: insensible water loss).
This issue is often caused by the use of conventional cosmetics containing glycerin and silicone. Glycerin attracts water out of the air and deeper layers of the skin bringing it to the surface, while silicone keeps the water on the surface, giving the illusion of "hydrated" skin. But as soon as the silicone layer wears off, the water evaporates, leaving the skin feeling tight.
True skin hydration comes from within, not from the outside!
To help dehydrated skin, here's what it needs:
- Drink at least 2 liters of water per day
- Apply a more occlusive and protective oil
- Avoid conventional cosmetics and makeup
Dry skin is a skin that no longer produces enough sebum, leading to feelings of tightness and the appearance of fine lines. It has lost its balance and no longer knows how to function properly. It needs a supply of fatty acids similar to sebum, as well as occlusive ingredients to maintain its hydration.
Here's what dry skin needs:
- A diet rich in fatty acids (oils, fish, avocados, nuts, etc.) as our modern diet is often low in fatty acids
- Gentle cleansers like liniment
- Quality oils similar to sebum
- Drink 2 liters of water per day
- Avoid conventional cosmetics and makeup
In plant oil-based skincare, the quality of the ingredients you choose is crucial. If your oil is not organic, it may contain traces of pesticides or other substances used during its production.
Moreover, refined organic oils may lose their active properties and virtues. That's why éméo selects high-quality virgin organic oils, cold-pressed or extracted using supercritical CO2 method.
For dry and dehydrated skin, we favor oils rich in saturated fatty acids and oleic acid (Omega 9) to maintain skin hydration. In reality, the skin can be both dry AND dehydrated.
The serum for dry and dehydrated skin is the same because both skin types need to maintain their hydration and strengthen their lipid barrier. This serum will have antioxidant properties and will be rich in Omega 9 and Omega 6.
Taking all these elements into account, we created the Bio Rehydrate Serum, an oil for the face that is complex in active ingredients but simple in composition.
